It was a visit to the offices of the Oceanographic Instrumentation Center (CIO) and Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO) located in former TIGO.
The visiting delegation was led by the Rector of the University of Concepción, Dr. Carlos Saavedra Rubilar; and the Vice-Rector for Research and Development UdeC, Dr. Andrea Rodríguez Tastets, who shared with researchers and professionals from CIO and IMO and were able to see in situ the facilities, equipment and capabilities of the center, as well as its projections in the areas of technological development and oceanographic services for Chile.
“On this occasion, the university authorities showed great interest in learning about the operation and capabilities of the autonomous vehicle “Lander”, developed entirely in Chile and which has descended to the maximum depths of the Atacama Trench,” said the deputy director of the Millennium Institute of Oceanography. and academic from the University of Concepción, Dr. Rubén Escribano Veloso, after the visit carried out on Wednesday, June 5.
About CIO
The Oceanographic Instrumentation Center was born within the Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO), with the aim of providing the community linked to oceanographic, geophysical and marine sciences with access to instruments, analysis, qualified human resources and technology, with the purpose of promoting frontier research.
The Center provides maintenance and calibration services to oceanographic equipment, and promotes the exchange of major equipment between research groups and the public and private sectors. Contributes to the development of ocean observation systems, maintaining, calibrating and developing new technological solutions. It also conducts technical training, in collaboration with national and international partners, in the use of advanced oceanographic technology, instrumentation, sample analysis, and data processing and analysis.
Currently, CIO has five associated institutions, among which are: the University of Concepción, the Millennium Institute of Oceanography, the Universidad Católica del Norte, the University of Valparaíso and the Center for Advanced Studies in Arid Zones (CEAZA).
Other users and collaborators are: COPAS Coastal, Universidad de Los Lagos, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad Austral de Chile, Universidad Católica de la Ssma. Concepción and University of Antofagasta.
