Within the framework of World Oceans Day, the Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO) participated in an event organized by the Museum of Natural History of Concepción (MHNC) and which brought together different centers and laboratories.
The activity took place from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the MHNC located in Plaza Acevedo de Concepción. There were interactive stands from the Millennium Institute of Oceanography, Department of Oceanography UdeC, COPAS-Coastal, Algalab, Centro INCAR and Instituto Milenio SECOS, among others.
"Today on World Oceans Day we have a small stand at the IMO, whose main attraction is the immersive experience with virtual reality glasses, where people can feel what it is like to be at the bottom of the Atacama Trench, but not like a human, but rather becoming an organism from the deep ocean and be visited by the lander," explained IMO Deputy Director of Linkage, Bárbara Léniz. "The video begins with total darkness, then you see this unmanned vehicle arriving, which comes from an unknown world on the surface and you can also see the different organisms that inhabit the Atacama Trench," she added.
"The importance of celebrating this day is fundamental because it is a window that allows us to make these ecosystems visible at not only regional, national, but also global level. And for us as MHNC it is one of the constant challenges. We are very interested in that people are aware of the environment in which we live and for that these articulations are wonderful with research centers, with universities and people who are expanding our horizon of knowledge and being able to articulate them here in the museum, to provide the community with this knowledge cutting-edge, it is fundamental and wonderful," said the person in charge of the Educational Area at the Concepción Natural History Museum, Evelyn Elgueta.
During the day, the Millennium Institute of Oceanography gave two workshops aimed at family audiences.
The first workshop was on "Entertaining drawing of deep-sea animals" which was led by the coordinator of IMO Linkage activities, Felipe Gamonal. "This workshop is based on introducing children to the organisms that live in the depths of the ocean and, obviously, relating it to the research carried out by the Millennium Institute of Oceanography, but then being able to take it to an art workshop where they can, through craftsmanship, creating different organisms from the depths of the ocean".
The second workshop was on "Plastic in the Oceans" and was led by Bárbara Léniz and Magdalena Alegría. "The objective of this workshop is to talk a little about the history of plastic and how we got to the current state of the ocean. It is not news to people that there is plastic in the oceans, but we are going to tell them how that plastic gets to the ocean. sea, how the tremendous problem we have today with plastic is generated and we are also going to reflect on what we can do about it. It is not only showing the negative, but also what we can do with this and what the role can be. of each one of us within this problem".
This workshop ended with the exhibition of a model inspired by the topic of plastic, the review of plastic samples from a Rapanui beach and the modeling of experiences with plasticine.
