IMO researcher participates in Imenco International Seminar in Puerto Varas

The research associate of the Millennium Institute of Oceanography, Dr. Mauricio Urbina, participated as a guest speaker at the International Seminar: "Comprehensive Approach to Upwelling Technologies for HAB Mitigation".

The event took place on August 7 at the Cumbres Hotel in Puerto Varas and featured prominent speakers such as: the Project Manager C-CORE Canada, Dr. Prem Thodi; the general manager of Plancton Andino, M. Sc. Alejandro Clément; the academic of the Department of Zoology UdeC and associate researcher of IMO, Dr. Mauricio Urbina; the general manager of SF-MSE, M.Sc. Felipe Chacana; and the academic and associate researcher of the I-Mar Center of the U. de los Lagos, Dr. Patricio Díaz.

“In this seminar I presented some characteristics of bubble curtains. Although we know that they are widely used in terms of mitigation, and many producers employ them, there is little information about how they work. There are crucial characteristics that determine whether a curtain is effective, such as the size of the bubbles. There is little real data on the bubble sizes used by these devices,” IMO Research Associate Dr. Mauricio Urbina told Aqua.cl. “In our study, we measured for several hours in the laboratory and used high-speed cameras to record different bubble sizes generated by various hoses. We also made measurements at different temperatures, which allowed us to obtain the first accurate data on the actual bubble size. Also, for oxygen transfer, it is crucial to understand the bubble rise rate, which is size-dependent and medium-dependent, which allowed us to estimate the bubble rise rate,” he added.
