IMO Director to Participate in Ocean Dialogue at Puerto de Ideas Festival Biobío 2024

Dr. Osvaldo Ulloa will be part of an exciting discussion about the high seas, which will take place next Sunday, August 25. Tickets are available at ticketplus.cl

The event will feature an oceanographer, a marine biologist, a lawyer and a historian, who will meet to present the topic “Altamar: How do we incorporate it into our thinking and protect it?”.

The guest speakers at this event will be: the director of the Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO), Dr. Osvaldo Ulloa; the director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research (INCAR), Dr. Renato Quiñones; the lawyer Mariana Blanco and the historian Rodrigo Moreno.

“Because they are distant from our daily perception and conversation, we are largely unaware of the growing threats of anthropic origin that are present today in the high seas and that affect us as humanity. For this reason, we must begin by recognizing their existence, generating curiosity about what happens there and, in this particular case, the solutions also involve reaching an agreement at a global level,” added the oceanographer. This activity not only seeks to raise the issue of protection of the high seas, but also to reflect on their incorporation “in our thinking and in our story of who we are as a country,” said Dr. Osvaldo Ulloa to Diario Concepción.

“High seas studies are expensive and are not perceived as something that has a direct or immediate benefit on society. But climate change, pollution, overfishing and the loss of biodiversity are indicating to us that the big problems are no longer local,” reflects Ulloa, adding: “As a country, we do very little in high seas research. However, in the field of international politics we are currently actors, and this may lead to giving a boost to high seas studies,” said the director of IMO.

The Oceanic Dialogue will take place on Sunday, August 25, at 12:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the Medical College of Concepción, located at Diagonal Pedro Aguirre Cerda 1180, Concepción.

Interested people can purchase their tickets, which cost $2,000.- at ticketplus.cl
